I haven’t had much to say about the networks’ announced Upfront 2013 schedules.   I have been much more interested in my own.

There are several problems facing the average TV viewer.

1.  There are many more TV series to like nowadays. Cable has ramped up its original content over the last decade.

2.  The year lasts 52 weeks. Television series typically receive orders for 10, 13, or 22 episodes.  Broadcast networks normally stretch 22 episodes over the 36 weeks of the official television season.

3.  Shows get axed.   60-75% of new broadcast network series don’t get picked up for a second season.

4.  TIme-slot shifting.  Every season, one-third of broadcast series move to other time-slots — sometimes twice — and many cable series also move between cycles.

5.  December interrupts everything.

Luckily, with DVRs and on-demand services, it’s easier than ever for viewers to make their own schedules.

A simple solution:

  • Stockpile episodes.
  • Place series on nights and in time-slots that fit the series.
  • Watch the short orders in the Fall,
  • Watch the long orders after the New Year.
  • Cram the B-level shows into Summer.
